Logistics for LIFE

Logistics for LIFE (www.logistics4life.eu) project aims at bringing together leading logistic companies, technology providers and research organizations working on innovative ICT solutions to ensure long-term sustainability of the logistic industry by increasing its operational efficiency. The Logistic For LIFE Coalition is built on the assumption that operational efficiency is the key for the long-term sustainability of the logistics industry, and that sustainability has a broader meaning than just environmental friendliness.

Sustainability must be pursued simultaneously along three dimensions:

  • Environmental sustainability (reducing emissions - technologies for vehicle and fleet efficiency, ICT support for modal shift from road to other modes, and environment-aware route optimization solutions);
  • Financial sustainability (improved planning and execution systems, e-business, tools simplifying management of multi-modal door-to-door shipments);
  • Societal sustainability (reduce freight transport impact on the community and on citizens' life by improved traffic management, more efficient infrastructure operation, enhanced security and safety control).

Next generation ICT for transport research should look across all three dimensions, developing solutions that use information integration and real-time communication technologies to address simultaneously the requirements of businesses, society and the environment.

Solutions from coordinated developments in four areas:

  1. Solutions for green and cost-effective freight transport
  2. Collaborative models for the logistic business
  3. Transparent freight traffic control and enforcement (supervising the flow of goods for security and safety control)
  4. Shared technology infrastructures.

LOGISTICS FOR LIFE's general goal is driving European ICT for transport research in the direction of making logistic operations more efficient, and thus more environmentally friendly, financially and socially sustainable on the long term.
